Bible Christian Chapel

The Bible Christian Chapel in Mount Pleasant is still in use today as the Primary School.

James Hall, carpenter, William Millhouse, mason and Thomas Keen in May 1858 purchased land from Henry Giles senior, from the subdivided Totness, for the establishment of a new Bible Christian Chapel which opened later that same year. Mark Lowe and William Limbert joined with these men as Trustees. Unfortunately support for this house of religion appealed only to the local townspeople and so it struggled to maintain a congregation.

It was leased by sisters Jane and Ann Freeman as a school, and the story for that can be found here

By 1861 the Bible Christian Chapel at Mount Pleasant had been disbanded, with the local Talunga District Council purchasing the premises for a school in 1865.

It is mentioned in 'The Quiet Waters By' that ..... Although all obvious ground level trace has long since vanished, occasional coffins uncovered by children digging in the present primary school yard in years gone by bear witness to the fact that a few burials evidently occurred behind the Totness Bible Christian chapel during the late 1850s; ...

Last Tuesday, Mr. B. Applebee, who resided about two miles from this township, started in pursuit of a young kangaroo that passed near his house. After going a few yards he fell. His wife seeing him lying on the ground went to him, and, finding he was ill, assisted him home, where he had only been about two minutes ere he was a corpse. A post mortem examination made at the inquest showed that death resulted from apoplexy caused by over-excitement, and a verdict was returned to that effect. The body was interred in the burial-ground adjoining the Bible Christian Chapel here, being followed to its last resting-place by many of the settlers and tradesmen of the locality.
