Tungkillo War Memorial

Tungkillo War Memorial has a different history to many others in that it started out in one place but is now permanently in another.

Tungkillo's Gala Day

Residents of the little town of Tungkillo had a crowded day of festivities on Saturday when the Centenary of the State was suitably commemorated. Many former residents were present at the back to school at 10.30 a.m., when Mr. G. T. Poison, formerly of the Education Department, called the roll showing an attendance of 136 former pupils.

The Director of Education {Mr. W. J. Adey) attended and delivered an address.

Luncheon was provided at 12.30 p.m. During the afternoon, which was devoted to sports of every description, Mr. G. T. Poison opened the newly-constructed Centenary arch and gates at the entrance to the Memorial Park, and his remarks were supported by Messrs. T. Playford and G. C. Morphett, M..P., and a wreath was laid at the soldiers' memorial by Mr. A. Britten-Jones.

The grand ball in the evening proved a fitting climax to a successful day and visitors were .present from almost every portion of the district.

From a financial point of view, the celebrations proved gratifying to the committee, of which Mr. J. H. Buckley was secretary, more than £50 being raised and this will be subsidized by a further £10 from the Centenary Committee.

The Centenary Arch and gates mentioned in this article are still in their original place but are often hidden by vegetation.

The Tungkillo community always planned to build a Memorial Hall, but this took many years to eventually eventuate, with much fundraising over time.
