William Phillis (senior)

brother of James Phillis, founding family

William Phillis, son of John and Charlotte Phillis (nee Gadwin), was born 1800 at Eastry, Kent, England, brother to James Phillis. He arrived in South Australia in January 1855, after landing at Melbourne on the ship Carntyne with his wife and many family members, and then travelling on ship Havilah to Adelaide, South Australia, with assistance of brother James Phillis.

Son Henry had arrived in South Australia in 1849 on ship Himalaya, and married his cousin Emma Phillis, daughter of James Phillis.

Daughter Susannah arrived in 1855 as did her parents, with her husband William Sherrif.

Son Alfred arrived in 1855 with his parents.

Son Joseph married Harriet (nee Fasham) before emigrating in 1855 as per his parents.

Son William also arrived in South Australia, as did his parents.

William and wife Sarah (nee Munday) settled at Flaxman Valley, and farmed, then removed to Hammond, however Henry returned to Flaxman Valley where he died in 1871. William was a supporter of the Angaston Show, winning prizes for his oats, onions, cheese and butter in 1854.

PHILLIS.—On the 8th November, at his residence, Flaxman's Valley, after a short illness, Mr. William Phillis, aged 70 years.

Both William and Sarah are buried at the St John Anglican Cemetery.
