Occupation prior to enlistment Wheelwright

Enlisted 26 April 1916 at Adelaide, SA with 27th Battalion. The Unit embarked from Adelaide per Barambaky 27 June 1916.

Transferred to 32nd Battalion 13 October 1916 at Etaples. Suffered with sickness (Orchitis, mumps) 11 December 1916. Returned to field. Gassed 15 February 1917. Suffered with sickness regularly thereafter and was transferred to hospital, returning to the field. Sprained ankle 16 September 1917.

Went on leave to UK 29 November 1917.

Sick with laryngitis 4 April 1918. Returned to field.

Killed in action in France 29 September 1918, aged 25 years

A farewell social was given in the Tungkillo hall on Tuesday to Private W, H. Cooke, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. William Cooke, who is leaving shortly for the front. Items were given by Misses K. Roper, G. Hobbs, and K. O’Brien. Speeches were made by the chairman, Mr. D. Roper, the Rev. J. H. Ashton, and Messrs. G. Lintern, F. Kain, and G. Fountain. Supper was provided. The guest received many presents from his friend.

Word has been received in Mannum that Pte. W. H. Cooke, of Tungkillo, is ill in hospital in England.

LATE PTE. W. H. COOKE.

Pte. William Horace Cooke, the only son of Mr and Mrs. W. Cooke, of Tungkillo, was killed in action in France on September 28. He went into camp in May, 1916, and had been twice gassed. He was born in Adelaide, educated at local school, Tungkillo, and had served at his trade as a wheelwright. Pte. Cooke was a great favourite. He was a member of the local Methodist Church.

COOKE— No. 5106, Pte. William Horace Cooke, 32nd Battalion, killed in action in France, the beloved only son of William and Elizabeth Cooke, Tungkillo, aged 25 years.
