Henry Phillis

son of William Phillis of Flaxman Valley

Henry Phillis was born 1824 at Eastry, Kent, England and arrived in South Australia in 1849 on ship Himalaya aged 24 years. Henry was a farmer and carried on this occupation at Mount Pleasant and Georgetown, before returning to Mount Pleasant where he died in 1898.

PHILLIS .-On the 4th November, at Updown Park, Mount Pleasant. Henry Phillis, the beloved husband of Emma Phillis, leaving a widow, three sons, four daughters, and sixteen grandchildren to mourn their loss, aged 74 years.

Henry married his cousin Emma Phillis, daughter of James, in 1851 and they had nine children.

OBITUARY.

Mrs. Emma Phlllis.

The death has occurred of Mrs. Emma Phillis, of Updown Park, Mount Pleasant, She celebrated her ninety-second birthday on December 21, 1925. Born at Eastry, in Kent, she was brought to Australia by her parents in 1839, and landed at Glenelg on her sixth birthday. Her mother died eight days later, after which the family removed to Emigrant square and subsequently to Port Adelaide. Later the young girl lived with an uncle and aunt. When nine years of age she and a brother walked from Port Adelaide to Mount Pleasant, where her father was living at that time. She remained there until married to her cousin (Mr. Henry Phillis) at the ago of 18. The couple occupied a farm at Mount Pleasant for some time, and then went to Georgetown, where they again carried on farming. After 12 years in that district they returned to Mount Pleasant, where Mrs. Phillis has resided since. In 1854 Mrs. Phillis and her husband, accompanied by her sister and brother-in-law (Mrs. and Mr. Tom Fulwood), each family with two children, went to Adelaide in a bullock dray to have the children christened. Her father died at the age of 93, and her husband at 74. Mrs. Phillis retained the full use of her faculties until the end of her life. There are three surviving children. 14 grandchildren, and 40 great-grandchildren.
