Presumption of death – Boston Aircraft A28-55 - one of four Boston Aircraft which carried out barge sweeps in the vicinity of Kai Island, Netherlands East Indies on 23 Sep 1944.
Flight Lieutenant Murrie was seen to jettison his hatch and abandon the aircraft. His parachute failed to open and he fell spreadeagled into the water.
The men who shot the plane, were the Japanese Navy, they were guarding at the beach. The Japs went to the spot in a boat, but nothing was found.

On 3 March 1941, on his first sortie from Palam airport, near Delhi, to drop supplies and men to British forces holed up behind Japanese invaders in Bruma, Brit died when his aircraft failed to take off properly. The Hudson aircraft crashed on take-off.

In 1943 his parents received a card stating he was well, then at Christmas 1944 they received a card stating he was with Colin McBean and friends - he had in fact died in September 1943. In 1945 the family were notified of his death.
Buried Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, Thailand, British plot 6, row D, gr 15-19, communal grave.

well. It was the first advice from him since his capture.

Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Horwood, of Rose Bank, Mount Pleasant, have been notified privately that their only son. Pte. R. E. Horwood, who was previously a prisoner of war in Japanese hands is known to have died of illness in 1943. Before enlisting, he was with Mr. W. B. Ferguson, of North Moolooloo station.
