William Henry Kemp arrived with his parents, Henry and Pleasant nee Phillis, on ship Carntyne, to Melbourne before immediately sailing on ship Havilah to Adelaide, with other members of the Phillis family, all related to James Phillis who had been in South Australia since 1839. James had returned to England to purchase stock and grain to improve his property at Mount Pleasant, and found his family members all wishing to venture to South Australia on his return.
William Henry Kemp married Mary Anne Fleming in 1857 and they had a family of five children. After the death of Mary Anne in 1877, William married his cousin's widow Jemima Dewell nee French, having a further two children with Jemima.
